Tips to Increase Pagerank

Pagerank according to some bloggers is an important factor determining the power of a blog, while for some others Pagerank is just another rank. I belong to the second category. I totally disagree when someone says me that “Pagerank is proportional to your blog’s power or quality”. Rubbish!
Pagerank according to me is not a blog quality determining factor. Pagerank in fact according to me has nothing to do with a blog’s quality or power. Pagerank is totally based (as far as I have researched and read on other blogs) only and only on one thing i.e. the number of blogs linking to your blog and the pagerank of those blogs. So in short the entire concept of Pagerank revolves in and around links, number of links, quality of links, authority of links, pagerank of links, etc.
So if you want to increase pagerank of your blog, you need to concentrate on your back links. Simply getting backlinks from millions of sites out there won’t work, you also need to concentrate on the quality of those links.

Factors Affecting Pagerank

  • Number of the backlinks.
  • Quality of the backlinks.
  • Number of OBL (Out Bound Links) from your blog.
  • Number of other pages the site linking to your blog links to!
  • Site design and structure.
  • Google + (Explanation below)

Ways To Increase Pagerank

  • Building high quality links.
  • Building a link wheel.
  • Interlinking your site pages.
  • Reduce the number of external pages you are linking to.
  • No-follow external links
  • Have a crystal clear site structure.
  • Social Media sharing.
  • Try building natural (at least natural-looking) backlinks.

Factors Not Affecting Pagerank

  • Your content! (Unbelievable? Explanation below)
  • Number of indexed pages.
  • META tags.
  • Domain age.

Factors Affecting Pagerank

Here are 6 factors that affect your site’s pagerank. Studying these factors, analyzing your strengths and weaknesses, planning, preparing and following a strategy can surely help you to improve pagerank.

Number of the backlinks

Your site pagerank depends a lot on the number of unique pages linking to your site. If you have a high number of backlinks, you can expect a high pagerank. This is the basic law.
Pagerank ∝ No. of backlinks
For those who didn’t understand the above formula, it means that pagerank is directly proportional to the number of backlinks you have. A site having 10,000 backlinks is expected to have a higher pagerank than a site having just 1000 backlinks.
So in short if you want to increase pagerank, concentrate on this principle and increase backlinks. There are certain things that need to be taken care of like – quality of backlinks, backlinks building speed and a few more. Your backlinks need to be good quality, you must build links at a human speed (slow). By human speed I mean to convey, build links at a natural speed and don’t use automated link building software or sites.

Quality of the backlinks

It is the quality of our work which will please God and not the quantity
The above quote by Mahatma Gandhi says a lot. Of course it’s related to human nature and human characters, but here I try to relate it with blogging & pagerank and to some extent even modify it.
Your site pagerank depends a lot on the quality of sites linking to your site or page. For example, a link from a PR4 site will give you more link and PR juice than a link from a PR3 site. In order to build a high pagerank you must concentrate on the quality of backlinks as well. Try building high PR links.
The pagerank of the site linking to your site is not the only factor affecting the quality of backlinks. Another quality factor is the authority of site linking to your site. A link from an authoritative site (a popular news site, a popular magazine, a widely read blog) is not less than a Christmas gift! Such links can take your site from PR1 to PR4 in no time!

Number of OBL (Out Bound Links) from your blog

If your blog page links to 100 external sites, your pagerank will be divided in 100 parts. So a PR4 will be divided into 100 parts and each of the external site will get + PR 4/100. So at the end very less PR value remains for your own blog and your pagerank can decrease. So link to few selected external sites and if you feel that you have linked to a lot of external sites, simply nofollow the links.

Number of other pages the site linking to your blog links to

If a site linking to your blog page links to 100 other sites, the pagerank will be divided into 100 parts. So if that site has a PR4, each of the 100 sites linked from that site will get a PR4/100 boost. So in order to keep a large share of pagerank for your blog, try building links from sites having a less OBL count.

Site design and structure

Your site design and structure may not be affecting your pagerank directly, but indirectly it affects your pagerank. Having a good site design, W3 valid coding, crystal clear structure will help search engines crawl your pages with ease and if you often interlink to your internal pages, a good and clear structure will help Google distribute pagerank evenly.

Google +

I am not sure if Google + counts affect your pagerank in any way now, but I think, in future Google + count will be a major factor affecting your pagerank. One of the major aims behind launching Google + was to improve the quality of the Google search results. Presently only SERPS (Search engine results page) are determined by the number of Google + counts, but in future I expect Google + counts to be a major factor affecting a site’s pagerank.
See, doing well in Google + will no doubt improve your traffic. Why not maintain a decent Google + count? So in case Google decides to use Google + as one of the many factors affecting your site’s pagerank, you may get a benefit!

Increase Pagerank

Building high quality links

So in order to increase pagerank you must immediately start building links. Try to build as many links as possible, but don’t neglect the quality aspect. Try getting links from authority sites in whichever way possible. Try getting links from educational sites (.edu sites) or government sites (.gov). Getting links from such sites is very difficult, but a single link from such sites can increase your page rank and even boost your search engine rankings. A few ways to build high quality links are,
  • Guest blogging
  • Social media
  • Selective link exchange
  • Building links from Squidoo, Hubpages & other authority sites

Building a link wheel

If you haven’t heard of a link wheel before, let me tell you that building a link wheel is one of the most effective ways to get high quality backlinks. When you build a link wheel, you inter link a few sites and each of these sites link to a common page from your site. Eventually all these sites get a ranking boost and your site page gets a major ranking boost.
Example:
Site A links to Site B which in turn links to Site C. Site C links to Site D and so on. Each site links to the consecutive site and a common page (a page whose pagerank you want to increase). You get an immediate rankings boost, because the pagerank value of each site page is evenly distributed between the sites and eventually all the high PR pages link to your page. This proves to be an immediate link boost! Building link wheel is time consuming so try making it as effective as possible. Build a long chain of sites, inter link all of them, don’t follow a link building pattern, etc. are a few ways to build an effective link wheel.

Interlinking your site pages

Don’t forget to interlink your site pages. If you write a post about increasing pagerank, don’t forget to link to a few related posts. Write a post on each of the sub-topics mentioned in the post about increasing pagerank and interlink them.Interlinking not only helps you to distribute pagerank evenly between your site pages, but also helps your visitors stay on your site for a much longer time which in turn reduces bounce rate!
Interlinking has many more benefits. Doing anything in excess harms, so does interlinking. Over-interlinking may confuse and distract your visitors and they may end up leaving your site! So don’t over-interlink your site pages.

Reduce the number of external pages you are linking to

Your pagerank is shared equally among the various pages you link to. So if your page has a PR1 and it links to 100 pages, each one of them will get 1/100 PR bonus. Thus very less link juice remains for your inner-pages. Also it’s believed that Google ranks pages with too many external links lower than the ones with less number of external links. It’s because pages with too many links mostly contain paid links, are made for link exchange or some other foul practice. In short, avoid linking to too many external sites and in case you decide to link to many external sites, just make sure that you have no-followed the links.

No-follow external links

No following external links is one of the best ways to keep the link juice reserved for your own site pages. Now, I don’t mean no-follow all the external links. You can remove the no-follow tag from certain links. You can remove the no-follow tag from guest writer’s links, links to your other blogs, links to high-authority sites like Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, etc.

Have a crystal clear site structure

Having a good site structure, inter-linking all internal pages helps in distributing the link juice properly and thus you can expect a higher pagerank. In order to increase pagerank, have a good navigation system at place. Link to all the important pages from your home page so that they get more link juice and there’s a PR increase. Link to your popular blog posts or the posts you want to recommend from your homepage.
Don’t forget to check if your site is validated by W3C. Having an error free site helps Google to crawl your site pages easily and efficiently.

Social Media sharing

Now this is something different. You already know that social media can help you get tons of visitors everyday. But do you know that social sharing can also help you increase your pagerank? Let’s classify it.
- Social Interaction Services
- Facebook, Twitter, Etc.
- Can get you a lot of traffic, indirectly build links and increase PR. This is how it works. You tweet or share your post on Facebook. Someone reads it, likes it and links to your post from his blog. Thus you get a free natural back link which in turn increases your pagerank.
- Social Bookmarking Services
- Digg, Reddit, Etc.
- Can get you a lot of free traffic, indirect backlinks, direct backlinks and also increase pagerank. Some one likes your post and links to it (indirect backlink). You share your post on a dofollow bookmarking site (direct backlink).

Try building natural (at least natural-looking) backlinks

The best way to build natural links is to ask your friends to link to your blog posts. Another way is to guest blog and request a link inside the body. Another way to increase pagerank, but a costly one is to hire a designer, get an infograph designed from him and then sit back and count the backlinks!

Factors Not Affecting Pagerank

Your content

Shocking, huh? Yeah, but your pagerank does not depend on your blog content! Even if you write 1000 words articles or if you copy a blog post from an other blog, your pagerank stands unaffected. How is that possible and how can I say that?
Long time back I found a blog which copied all my blog posts. When I visited that blog, I found out that the blog had a PR4. So what I concluded was that you don’t need to have original content in your blog. Pagerank doesn’t depend on your content. Pagerank just depends on the links.
Does that mean you should stop writing and start copying? Of course no! A duplicate post can get a PR4, but still it won’t rank higher than the original post (in 99% cases). So write original articles only.

Number of indexed pages

Long time back I read an article about increasing pagerank. One of the tips was to write a lot of articles and have a lot of pages indexed in Google. I researched and found out that it isn’t true. The number of indexed pages has nothing to do with your pagerank!

META tags

Another article I found out suggested that filling META details properly can increase your pagerank. But it’s not true. Filling META details properly can help you rank better in Google, get more traffic, but it cannot help increase your blog’s pagerank. May be when someone visitors your blog, likes your blog posts, links to you, you can get a backlink and see a PR increase, but that’s only a possibility! A visitor won’t link to your blog post always if he likes it!

Domain age

If domain age was a factor, many domain traders would have been partying all day long! I don’t think domain age affects your pagerank in any way. I have several domains, older than a year, but all have PR-NA. One of my friend has a 10 year old domain with a PR-NA. So I don’t think, the domain age affects your pagerank in any way. If it does, it affects your pagerank slightly and it’s certainly not a factor you must focus.
There are many more factors not affecting your pagerank and there may be more things that affect pagerank. I have listed only the best ways to improve your pagerank. If you have any more tips to increase pagerank, feel free to share it here!
