Many people want to use Cloudflare with their website but can not really understand how to implement the DNS settings to the Cloudflare Control Panel.Well this post would give you a step by step tutorial about how to deal with DNS records to activate Cloudflare.

Step 1 :

  • We assume that you already have a Domain and a hosting for the website and have full access to the Domain and Hosting control panel.
  • If not get these things done and move on to the next step.

Step 2 :

  • Register with Cloudflare.
  • Add your website to Cloudflare and go through the 5-10 minute process of adding a website.
  • After you are done, Cloudflare should give you the NAME SERVERS for your domain.
  • Add the name servers to your Domain Control Panel and wait for DNS update.
  • A DNS update can take about 48 hours maximum. But in most cases it will be updated within 3-4 hours.
  • Once the DNS is updated you can move on to the next step.
To know whether the DNS is updated or not, you can check your Domain’s Whois information from who.is and look for the Name Server Settings. If you find Cloudflare Name Servers, that means the DNS has been updated.

Step 3 :

  • Log in to your Cloudflare account.Your Domain Should now be visible in the “My Domains” section.
  • Click on the settings icon at the Right hand corner of your Domain.A Dropdown menu would pop up.Click on the DNS Settings
  • All the Default DNS settings will be shown there.Delete all the default entries.

Step 4 :

  • Create a new DNS entry of Type “A”.Add your domain name ( Without http:// and www. ) in the “Name” section.Add your hosting servers default IP address in the “Point to” section.Leave TTL at Automatic and click on ADD.
  • Create another DNS entry of Type “CNAME”.Add “www” ( Without the quotes ) in the “Name” section.Add your domain name ( Without http:// and www. ) in the “is an alias of” section.Leave TTL at Automatic and click on ADD.You can repeat this step to add as many sub-domains as you want.Be careful to add proper settings.
  • For example suppose picture.techattacks.blogspot.com is a subdomain of the directory techattacks.blogspot.com/picture.The setting would be –> Create DNS entry of Type “CNAME”.Add “picture” ( Without the quotes ) in the “Name” section.Add techattacks.blogspot.com/picture in the “is an alias of” section.Leave TTL at Automatic and click on ADD.
  • Now its time to enter MX entries that will route the emails.Create another DNS entry of Type “MX”.Add your domain name ( Without http:// and www. ) in the “Name” section.Add your default name server provided by your Hosting Company in the “mail handled by” section. As most of the hosting companies provide 2 name servers you can create two different MX entries for each name server.Set One’s priority to “5″ and others to “10″.Save the entries by clicking Add button.
You can export the DNS settings for further use.Its always recommended to back up your DNS settings. If you change your hosting Company or your hosting company changes the default IP address of the server, you will have to change the DNS setting accordingly.
